It is estimated that over seven million central venous access devices (CVADs) are inserted and utilized for patients requiring complex infusion therapies in various healthcare settings. With the increased utilization, complications may develop after the insertion and during the length of dwell causing delays in the completion of the prescribed therapy, morbidity, mortality and increased healthcare costs. The presentation is designed for clinician’s requiring knowledge and skills in various types of CVADs, the care and maintenance, nursing assessment and management of complications such as catheter related infections, occlusion and thrombosis.

Objectives:

1.      Describe the appropriate anatomical placement of a central venous device tip

2.      Identify several common types of devices used for central venous access along with the advantages and disadvantages of each

3.      Discuss care and maintenance of central venous vascular devices according to published standards of practice

4.      Describe central venous access device common complications and management
