Peripheral Venipuncture: A Step by Step Approach

In this presentation, you will learn the process involved in preparing for peripheral venipuncture and a step by step approach to learning the technique and tips for the successful insertion of a peripheral access device. Patients with difficult venous access will be discussed along with the recommended approach.

Peripheral infusion therapy is an important element of patient care but many clinicians lack the confidence, knowledge and skill in venipuncture. In this presentation, you will learn the process involved in preparing for peripheral venipuncture and a step by step approach to learning the technique and tips for the successful insertion of a peripheral access device.  Patients with difficult venous access will be discussed along with the recommended approach. Venipuncture is an acquired skill therefore the participant is encouraged to practice and be supervised by an experienced clinician to demonstrate competency.

Objectives
At the end of the presentation, the participant will be able to:

  • Identify the process involved in preparation for peripheral venipuncture.
  • Describe the steps involved in the successful insertion of a short peripheral catheter for infusion therapy.
